National Park Hohe Tauern

The National Park Hohe Tauern is home to about 550 mountain lakes, numerous mountain streams and ravines. Therefore the national park ranks among the water-richest regions of Austria. The world famous Krimml Waterfalls are the largest waterfall of Europe and distinguished with the nature protection certificate of the Council of Europe.


The National Park Hohe Tauern was founded in 1981 and was Austria’s first national park. In the following years it has developed to the biggest protected area of the Alps.

The largest sanctuary of the Alps shows its old and wild virgin landscape as well as alpine farmer’s cultivated land. Explore the biodiversity and the breathtaking landscape during your summer holidays.
