National Park Centre

The largest protected area of the Alps… Primeval landscape and rural cultural landscape.

These are the two faces of the National Park Hohe Tauern. With an area of 1,856 km² it is by far the largest nature reserve of the Alps. The protected area extends from alpine primeval landscapes like glaciers, rock faces and lawn as well as for centuries well-kept alpine pastures.

The National Park Hohe Tauern has opened in 1981 and has been the first national park in Austria at that time. In the following years the protected area, where the states Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol are involved, has developed to the largest protected natural region of the Alps.
